The purpose of the
Student Ministries at Our Father is to help all students live an
authentic relationship with God where they experience the
forgiveness of sins found in Jesus Christ, are encouraged to put
their hope in their Creator and are challenged to live outside
of themselves by reaching out into the community.
In order to
accomplish these goals, our volunteers and ministry staff pray
that the
Holy Spirit would use the following activities to move in the
hearts of the
community of students and their parents in our community:
Note: For
specific times, dates, and permission slips, please visit the
Student
Calendar.
Worship:
In addition to our regularly schedule worship times, students
will have several opportunities throughout the year to worship
in different styles and churches in the Denver area. These
opportunities can be found on the Student calendar when they are
available.
Fellowship:
We believe that developing relationships between students is a
necessary component to the Christian faith. Christian
relationships can provide accountability, encouragement, and
comfort during times of crisis. For that reason, fellowship
activities are held throughout the year to encourage these
relationships. Activities include retreats, lock-ins, bowling,
Ultimate Frisbee, Lazer Tag, parties, game nights, and more.
Service:
Using Christ’s example of caring for others as a model,
opportunities will be available throughout the year in the hope
that each student will develop a life-long attitude of service
for both their community and the world. Opportunities include:
Large scale servant event (7-10 days) in the U.S. and abroad,
small scale service events (1-2 days) like the 30 Hour Famine (www.30hourfamine.org)
and mini-service projects (1-5 hours) like serving at soup
kitchens, nursing homes, and right here at OFLC.
Spiritual Growth:
Again, our prayer is that every
student in our ministry would become LIFE-LONG Disciples of
Christ. In order to help make this a reality, we offer weekly
opportunities for Bible study (9:30 AM on Sunday mornings),
small groups (beginning in the Fall of 2007), and retreats all
designed to help students make sense of our changing culture, in
light of Gods unchanging truth found in the Bible.
Wednesday Evening Experience (W.E.E.):
Offered (almost)
every Wednesday night throughout the year, the W.E.E. is a good
place to unwind after a long day at school, connect with
friends, or meet new ones. We do everything from Stress Relief
nights to Ultimate Frisbee, to topical Bible studies on issues
that teens face on a daily basis. Every night could be
different, but the message is the same.
Summer Trips:
In addition to yearly servant events (mentioned above), there
will be opportunities to attend large youth gatherings around
the country. Every three years the LCMS National Youth
Gathering brings over 35,000 students to one place to worship,
study, and grow closer to the Lord. On alternate years, we will
attend a smaller gathering hosted by the Rocky Mountain District
along with 3,000 other high school age Lutherans in our
district. These events can be powerful avenues of growth and
discipleship for those who attend.
Community Stewardship:
In order to offset the cost of some of the more expensive events
throughout the year, we ask all members of the Student
Ministries to participate in a stewardship event held during the
year. Future opportunities include golf tournaments, silent
auctions, and flamingo raids. Each opportunity is designed to
help build community in the group by supporting each other in
prayer, money, and sweat equity! Before the funds are
distributed, a 10% tithe is given back to the congregation, or
another ministry of mercy in thanks for God’s blessings. |
