Position Description for Lay Minister
Position Purpose:
A Lay Minister at Our Father Lutheran Church is to be Christ to our neighbor, within our congregation especially.
Essential Position Functions and Responsibilities:
1. Contact each family assigned to Lay Minister. Listen to concerns, encourage in ongoing discipleship, and make aware of events and opportunities at church and in the community. Send cards for birthdays, anniversaries, birth of new babies, get well, sympathy, graduation, confirmation, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
2. Regularly pray for each family and its members, let them know the specific times they will be prayed for and give them an opportunity to share specific prayer requests. Each Lay Minister should be involved in the Prayer Chain either by email or by phone so they are able to be informed about their families’ needs.
3. Serve as a connection between church members, the pastor and the church staff.
4. Make hospital or home visits as the situation necessitates. If members are unable to attend church due to health reasons, arrange with the church office for home communion.
5. Work with meal coordinators and others to ensure that food will be brought to member families who are in need of some respite from cooking, dependent on needs and life situations.
6. Attend quarterly Lay Ministry training sessions and meetings.
